When I was being raptured away by the garden of psychedelic delights that is God of Blades, I don’t remember thinking that it was a game that needed multiplayer. No matter – apparently that’s what the developers at White Whale Games were thinking, because the forthcoming update to their iOS action game is adding just that.
The new multiplayer component allows you to compete against Game Center friends for high scores – but in order to post a high score you must defeat your friend’s character in a showdown. At least, I think that’s how it works from the description – it might be weirder than that, this is God of Blades, after all. Besides the Game Center multiplayer, there’s also character customization on the way, so your Nameless King can now don a variety of armors and horned chapeaus, or even be a Nameless Queen, if you prefer. The update also adds two new sets of levels.
There’s one change that White Whale are making that’s an obvious mistake, however. One of GOB’s most remarked-upon features was the location-aware system that unlocked new swords if you were in a library. White Whale are backing down on this and making the formerly library-exclusive swords available to everyone.
Come on, White Whale – you shouldn’t be retreating on the library bit, you should be doubling down. I say lock every sword in the game, with their release contingent on the player mailing in a letter from the local library, attesting that the player’s library account is in good standing with no late fees. Not too late to submit a new binary to Apple, just sayin’.
The free God of Blades update should be along this month, though with Apple’s long approval queues this time of year it might take longer than planned.
I’ve already embedded the GoB trailer into numerous posts but here it is again anyway because the music is just so sick.
UPDATE: White Whale reached out to insist that they’re not backing off of the Loreseeker library-aware feature – it’s still keeping one sword level locked away, but many GoB players lived outside of areas where Loreseeker worked, hence the loosening of the requirements for some swords.
